review 1: I took a chance on Carbon Copy after learning that the author was an African American writer who once taught in PG County public schools in Maryland - where I’m from. I’ve read a few other books published by Life Changing Books and they were fairly decent, however, I really did not like this novel. The authors characters were typical of street lit novels, but the plot was boring. I understand that street novellas typically have one devilish female character and a man equally as heinous in his actions; however, in order to write a fairly decent story, you have to have a balance between characters - there must be at least one character who is relatable where the others are not, sensitive where the other characters are insensitive, understanding, likable. For whatever rea... moreson Azarel decided to re-write storytelling and chose not to include this necessary balance in Carbon Copy. The main character Dominique, a bad, jealous, hateful woman is as frustrating a character as her twin sister, Monique, who is supposed to be good, reasonable, and the character with whom the reader identifies. On the other hand, the novel is full of grammatical errors and Azarel does not successfully switch voices between characters, despite having each chapter in the novel be a glimpse into one of the characters’ lives. Raphael’s voice is very similar to Dominique’s. And while Monique is supposed to be the “classy” female character, she turns out to be ghetto trash, just like her uncultured sister. Moreover, I find it so frustrating when street lit authors take it upon themselves to provide readers with a family analysis to explicate why certain characters are so evil - instead of elaborating and exposing family dysfunction in African American families, the authors seem to take advantage of true mental and social concerns that negatively affect real people, using them to sell a good story.
review 2: This is my first time reading anything by this author and I have to say she did a great job. This book keeps me opening to reading her other books. Great job.Action all thoughout this book and that is a A plus to me.Dominique whats everything that her sister wants and sometimes more then what her sister her twin sister have.Monique is the good twin the twin everyone likes the most including there own mom. Dominique goes though everything to get what her sister has including her sister man Rapheal. But, Dominique settles for seconds with a guy name Yuri that is a bad guy that is into way to much if you ask me. He get Dominique hooked to his drama that causes her to do the unthinkable to get what she wants.Dominique mother Rudy starts to figure out about her daughter during and set to get the answers she is looking for.In the meantime Dominique pushes up on Raphael by any means. She don't want no one in the picture to enter fear in her getting her man that she is so in love with. But, he don't want anything to do with her. Book was written well. Kept me wanting to read more about crazy Dominique. less
