review 1: While based on true events, the author explains that little is actually known about what was said and done by Roosevelt and Muir during their trip together through Yosemite. So of necessity, some of this story is fictionalized. But it is still a marvelous story about the power of one person to make a difference. Teddy Roosevelt was well-known for his love of the outdoors and John Muir for his dedication to protecting the wild places before it was too late, so it's not surprising that the two got together on this and created some of the National Parks that are so popular today, including Yosemite. There is one particular illustration that I found especially powerful. The illustration shows Muir talking to Roosevelt while above their heads is an illustration of Yosemite ... moreunder development. What a shame it would have been if that had happened. A beautiful book on an topic of continuing importance to future generations.
review 2: What a great book to introduce young children to two champions of America's wilderness: Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir. This book is based upon a true event. Muir was a true cheerleader for the wilderness, wanting to protect it from gold prospectors and businessmen who only saw how much money the beautiful land could make them. Aware of Muir's passion for the area, especially the ancient sequoia trees, Roosevelt asked Muir to take him on a camping trip into the California's Yosemite wilderness so he could see the area for himself. The outcome of that trip? Roosevelt and the government protected the land of Yosemite, and 17 other lands including the Grand Canyon, turning them into our National Parks. Author's notes at the end of the book indicate that under Theodore Roosevelt's time as President, in addition to the national parks, the government founded the first 55 bird sanctuaries and game preserves, added 148 million acres to the National Forest, and doubled the number of National Parks. Amazing! And it all started with a camping trip!Reviewed by: Lisa Coleman, Youth Services, Vernon Area Public Library less
