review 1: This book seemed to have an interesting premise, which is that we can learn a lot about human medicine and ailments from looking seriously at what we know about animal medicine and ailments. However, in just the first chapter, I found that there was about 15% interesting new ideas, and 85% repeating and insisting and re-stating the same idea over and over. I didn't want to be convinced, I wasn't a recalcitrant reader. I just wanted to read about the new ideas. I skimmed another chapter or two and found the same overwhelming repetition. Maybe this would have made a better book if it were a quarter as long? Not sure. Anyway, decided not to read.
review 2: The author is the Los Angeles zoo's cardiology consultant. Her day job is cardiology for humans, but she also
... more trained in psychiatry. As a result of her unique professional pedigree, she has an interesting set of stories to tell about the animal analogues of human diseases. Her point that MDs should pay more attention to the findings published in veterinary journals and collaborate more often on research is well-taken. My only qualm with the book is that it lapses into evolutionary "just-so" stories at times to emphasize the parallels between human and animal disease. less

Cooperative medicine at its best. Engaging yet factual. I enjoyed it.
