review 1: This book is fascinating. Contrary to its title, it's really about the lifecycle of the human brain. It turns out that some of us will not fall into mental illness later in life despite having all the internal degrading symptoms in our brains. Some will learn how to simultaneously use the frontal lobes of both right and left sides of our brains to process information instead of only relying on one at a time. In addition, some will continue to increase the amount of "white matter" in our brains, allowing us to process information faster. This book was a pleasant wake up call from my incorrect understanding that we are born with all the brain cells we will ever have. It's also an exciting glimpse into the future of where continued discovery will tak... moree us.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Strauch does a good job of encouraging those of us who are dealing with aged parents suffering with dementia, and allows us to informally evaluate the status of our own brains. It also gives us hope that we do have a mental future. My mother-in-law had an abrupt decline at 93, after a life-long adventure of learning and experience. Strauch's explanations give us a window of insight into what sustained her for so long. less
