review 1: As soon as I heard the author on radio, talking about her book, I knew I had to read this. This is the story about Andrée's extremely failed polar expedition but it's also the story about Bea Uusma's obsession with the expedition. Being a person who quite easily gets obsessive myself, I looove reading about other people's obsessions and special interest and one thing is sure: Bea Uusma knows, and cares, A LOT about the subject she writes about. The general feeling of the book is this cold eeriness. You really feel like you're on the ice, deep in snow. The photos in the illustrated edition is hauntingly beautiful (and a bit creepy at times like when you get to see what's left of the bodies). This is seriously on of the most interesting books I've ever read. And it has the... more most fitting and beautiful cover I've ever seen as well. LOVED LOVED LOVED IT.
review 2: En sann historia om Andrée-expeditionen 1897. Det som hände var: tre män beger sig ut i en vätgasballong för att försöka korsa Nordpolen. Det har aldrig gjorts förut. Efter bara några dagar stöter ballongen i marken. De tre expeditionsmedlemmarna överlever i några veckor och lyckas ta sig iland på "Vitön" där de sätter upp ett läger. Men bara efter några dagar på Vitön dör de under mystiska omständigheter.33 år senare upptäcks deras kroppar. Alla bevis röjs undan, kropparna bränns till aska och kläderna tvättas. Bea Uusma har blivit besatt av deras livsöden. Nästan maniskt letar hon efter förklaringar till deras död. Hennes sökan leder till många återvändsgränder och få resultat.
