The Blood Vivicanti
review 1: (Book was gifted by author for review)Book 2 in the series finds us learning more about Mary and Wyn. She is now living in Wyn's expansive mansion. We get a real sense of her opulent surroundings as a result of her photographic memory. With the gift of the Blood Vivicanti her senses are heightened, which means she is able to tell the history of every item that fills the house. I really enjoyed Mary's descriptions of the things that surrounded her, as it gives the reader a feeling of being there with her and feeling what she feels, right down to the description of the Earl Grey tea that is being prepared for her when she woke up. We learn that Wyn is a scientist and he is responsible for creating what she has now become. I have a few misgivings about Wyn, Mary describes him... more as a cat, only wanting people when he will benefit from them. I feel that there are many things that he is hiding from both Wyn and herself. He may seem self confident and sure of himself to those around him but I feel there is something he is hiding that will change the way Mary views herself in the future.Wyn is another character that I feel is not all he seems on the surface, he is guiding Mary in her transition and even tries to help her with her first feed, which is always difficult. There are so many levels to this story that are still to be revealed. The style that the story is presented in also makes it feel more like a conversation between the character and the reader, as Mary speaks to the reader in telling her thoughts about the people she is now living with and, the way that she has changed since Wyn saved her and brought her to his mansion. So far my favourite thing about this new breed of vampire is, their ability to retain the memories of the people that they drink from, personally I think this a brilliant twist. To be able to do anything from retaining memories is a fascinating concept.I am looking forward to reading part 3 with much anticipation, it is definitely a series that leaves you wanting more.
review 2: Becket does it again. In the second installment of The Blood Vivicanti, we are taken a bit further into the world that Mary Paige was pulled into at the end of the first story. The result is fantastic.Questions are answered about who the BV are, and what gifts Mary Paige's new powers have given her. We are given a glimpse into two new, equally colorful characters, Wyn and Theo. Finally, we are given more mysteries to solve, whetting our appetites for the third installment. Becket pairs satisfying reveals with the promise of things yet to come, and at just the right pace.In a prose that reads almost like haiku or poetry, Becket manages to convey Mary Paige's world in a way that is both brief and colorful all at once. Using language to convey a mood, or set a stage, is where he thrives as an author. He pulls you into the story with a handful of words, and the response is visceral. It is a testament to the power of language that his fictional world appears vividly in the reader's head.I'm excited to see where he takes the remaining four installments to the story. Mark my words: Becket will be the author to watch this year less
