review 2: Okay, so this is my first review, so bear with me. Trying to give as much information as possible without giving too much information is a very real struggle =]Rating: 4.5 (I teetered back and forth between liking this book (4 stars) and loving it (5 stars), but neither felt quite right, so an unofficial 4.5 it is)Not So Brief Synopsis: Sophia Claremont is somewhat like your typical paranormal romance heroine. Her home-life is a far cry from ideal (her mother was admitted to a lunatic asylum when she was a child and her father abandoned her a few years back, leaving her to live with her best friend, Ben, and his parents). She also clearly suffers from self-esteem issues, despite the fact that she is described as being incredibly beautiful. While on their annual family vacation, Ben and his family forget all about Sophia's 17th birthday, again...apparently this is a thing with them, which upsets her and sends her off to walk the beach alone. While out, she meets Lucas who is wearing his sexy suit with an ugly arrogance tie. Its a shame that Sophia's parents didn't hang around long enough to teach her that you never turn your back on an obvious threat, because, as soon as she turns to walk away, Lucas drugs her and carries her off to an uncharted island (The Shade) whose local inhabitants prefer sipping 0 neg to Mai Tais. The Shade runs just like a small country: you have the ruling family, the aristocracy, those in favor with the aristocracy, and the peasant/plebeian folk. Oh, and slaves. Lots of kidnapped, adolescent human slaves (apparently it is customary to kidnap slaves at 17, keep them for a year, and then eat them when they turn 18 because that is when their blood is sweetest). Once Sophia arrives, she is taken to the slave holding cells to be examined before being distributed to an owner. While there, she is again assaulted by Lucas, who clearly expresses a sexual desire for her until he is interrupted by his sister, Vivienne. Turns out, their younger brother is the "King" of The Shade, has been asleep for the past 400 years, and is due to wake up at any moment. That's where Sophia comes in. She, along with four other girls, have been selected to be in the King's Harem. They are taken to a spa, given the royal treatment, and then dressed in the finest clothes to go and meet their new master. The book then switches POV to Derek, the vampire "King" who has been asleep for the past four centuries. He wakes up and is immediately presented with his new harem, a present from his loving brother and sister. But, after being asleep for so long, he wakes up parched and immediately starts salivating at the prospect of devouring the five beautiful young girls laid out before him like an elegant buffet, if there is such a thing. He is about ready to pounce when he sees Sophia grab the girl beside her's hand in an effort to comfort her. That small act ignites the human side in him and he rushes her, lifting her up and pinning her against the wall, holding her up with his pelvis (yummy!). But, then she opens her mouth and ruins the moment by saying "no please don't eat me." Okay, so that's not exactly what she said, but the end result was the same: Derek put her down and the could be steamy, ravish-me moment died. But, he did take her on as his "personal" slave and they take their leave to do what paranormal romance protagonists do best, tease their readers with relentless, unresolved sexual tension. My Review: This story has a lot of potential, but this book/novella did not do it justice. The main characters remained very flat and the plot needed a lot more substance. What I think would really make this story better is if the author would have given more of a back story to Sophia. I realize that some people like books that jump right into the action, no back story included, and I agree that I'm not a big fan of books that take forever to get to the point, but I felt like I finished this book without having a real sense of who Sophia is. I look forward to starting book 2, "A Shade of Blood," tonight. Hopefully, as it is a full length novel, it will provide more fleshy characters and a better look at the world they are living in.I will say, if any of you have read The Vampire Diaries and got all hot and bothered by the steamy Delena moments in the Dark Dimension, this book reminded me of that (the whole master/slave erotic domination thing - pg 13 version). So if that was something you liked, I highly recommend this book! less

This one was not to my taste. Sofia gets kidnapped off the beach by an evil vampire who takes her to a secret island to be in the freshly-awakened vampire prince's harem.I'm all about the overwrought YA angst, but this one just had too many places where I had to suspend disbelief (and not in a good way) and scratch my head for the plot. Why did they awaken Derek? If Lucas is all evil, why did he allow this? If Derek is all goody goody, why doesn't he immediately change all the rules on Shade? If all the other vampires are like "oh you are a legend, we shall bow down before you, we need you to save us" shouldn't that be possible? Why is Corrine helping them if she's a powerful witch?I understand Stockholm syndrome, but the insta-love (and mostly summarized insta-love at that, rather than letting the reader experience the delicious, slow build up of trust and friendship) here was too soon, too sudden, and made Sofia seem like a patsy instead of a strong character. She's all holding hands and asking "can I trust you?" and when Derek says yes is all believing and mushy. Hmm.....she's a slave. She's seen other humans horribly mistreated (although strangely enough she and the other harem girls are not mistreated in the slightest bit and she evens easily dissuades Derek the 400 year old vampire from even kissing!) and she's all like "but I can trust YOU."Maybe the whole slave thing made me squirmy. I'm not sure. But this one wasn't for me.

This is a hard review for me because I completed the series before reviewing any of the individual books. There were parts of the series that I really liked & parts that really grated on my nerves. The story wasn't boring by any means - action, love, lust, betrayal, mystery, angst, hope, forgiveness, tragedy, etc.... The series had so many elements that nearly anyone could find something they held dear from it. Like Derrick, I often wondered just how much shit they'd have to go through before death or normalcy ever found any of the characters. So, I was thrilled that the series ended on an uplifting note. That said, I think it all just became too much after book 5. Books 6 & 7 were vital to the storyline, but I just feel like a lot of the side stories within all the books should've been cut down so that the series wasn't so exhaustingly long. My main issue was the multiple POVs throughout the series. It overloaded the books, sometimes became repetitive, and just made the main story take too long. Thus a 2 1/2 star rating verses 3 stars. Otherwise, this was a nice paranormal romance/action series.

Could have been longer and more detailed, but was overall pretty good for a free book.

Definitely "young adult", but it grew on me.
