review 1: Well, what I suspected would happen, happened. I'm going to try and be as vague as possible so as not to give any spoilers but I have to vent... Why?!?! Ok, I understand that it was a spell and Derek had no control over his body and later his mind even but why?! I can't even compare this to the 2nd book because Derek wasn't in a relationship with Sophia at the time. They were both trying to forget each other. It is a totally different circumstance. I can forgive the Book 2 incident because of that. But this? And they didn't even tell Sophia. She has to know! This has to be dealt with and I'd like to see some guilt or remorse on Derek's part. Sure, he hated Emilia and she's been dealt with but not once did he think about how what he did would make Sophia feel. To me that's ... moreselfish and speaks volumes. Of course Sophia would forgive him (she's a lot better at that than I am) but she needs to know. It may break her but finding out from someone other than Derek himself will destroy her. Spell or no spell.*sigh* Ok, now that I've got that off my chest... It was another great installment. Action packed. Heartbreaking and hopeful by turns. I feel like there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel. And as always, I love the contrasting views. It really helps to get the full scope when you can understand the thought processes of all the major characters.(Note: I've noticed this with many ebooks, this one is no different, but the amount of typographical errors is disappointing. To me, this is a publisher problem and not an author one. While annoying to have to occasionally re-read some sentences, it doesn't detract from the story as a whole. However, I sincerely hope that all these ebook companies get a lot better at proofreading soon.)
review 2: I'm not done yet. I read the first three books of the series in one day. They're short and easy to get hooked on. I slowed down for the fourth and have been reading this one at a snail's pace. Actually thinking while reading this series has killed it for me. These books are really poorly written. It's easy to miss and/or excuse if you're devouring them, but it's true. The grammar is awful. There are colloquialisms and idioms that are written completely wrong. There is incorrect prepositions usage. The editor was apparently asleep at his/her keyboard for this series. On top of that, when one stops to think about Sophia, and Sophia and Derek's relationship. Wow. Holy disfunction. Sophia has fallen in love with the guy who held her captive. There's an actual psychological term for that: Stockholm syndrome. It's a mental illness caused by abuse and trauma, not something to swoon over. If that weren't bad enough, Derek just forcefully takes what he wants from Sophia without her consent. Also, abusive. And Sophia? She just takes it all and is admired for her ability to endlessly "forgive and forget." Talk about disturbing. She is the perfect model of an abused woman. She is an awful example that teaches that men can take what they want, and the women in their lives should accommodate them without the expectation of being treated decently at all times. Her raising her eyebrow to him from time-to-time does not make it a healthy relationship between equals. What is this supposed to teach women and the teenage audience it's presumably aimed at? It certainly doesn't teach grammar, self respect, or healthy relationships. This is worse than Twilight. less
