review 1: Bradlee tells a compelling story of Ted Williams, complicated man who excelled in everything he did except his personal life. Williams struggled through childhood as his father, an alcoholic abandoned the family and his mother a Mexican-American worked endlessly for the salvation army. Ironically, Ted abandoned his children although he did support them financially and he gave willingly to sick children and needy families like his mother had done. He survived childhood by "adopting" the fathers of his friends. However, the anger he had toward his mother exploded in his relationships with women. And of course there is the story of baseball from the 1930s until 1960.
review 2: As someone who grew up in San Diego and loved baseball from an early age, I thought
... moreI knew a fair amount about Ted Williams. Reading Bradlee's book opened my eyes to many things I didn't know, especially about his life before the Red Sox. Lots of great information about Ted's years playing and his time in the military (much of which he strongly resented especially during his time in Korea). Bradlee does his best to make sense of Ted's life after baseball, especially with respect to his children, their feuds, and the final disposition of his body. less

This book is about 300 pages too long, but if you're a Red Sox fan, it's a must.
