review 1: I loved this book! Dennon is a slightly misanthropic scholar who becomes our reluctant hero as he teams up with a band of warrior women. Dennon was a perfect protagonist in that he wasn't perfect by any means - he has doubts and would prefer to run away from danger rather than charge straight into it. Yet despite everything, he turns out to be a good person and maybe a hero himself, much to his surprise. The plot was quite entertaining as the main characters go on a Da Vinci Code style quest to uncover historical relics all while trying to defeat hordes of the undead. I liked how issues of gender roles/equality are brought up as well as the Scriber's dedication to preserving and protecting knowledge. Overall, I'd highly recommend the book to anyone who likes high-fan... moretasy with non-traditional heroes.P.S. I bought the kindle book on Amazon for only $0.99 (August 2014). Given how much I enjoyed the book, this seems ridiculously inexpensive, so really don't hesitate to buy it!
review 2: For fantasy lovers, this is a real treat. A heroine that is larger than life, wielding swords that no other man would dare, and battling men and beasts that no one else in the realm could even try. It has an all too human protagonist who moves on with an epic quest despite his personality (and this personality will grate you). It has evil spirits. It has good spirits. It has timeless history and a sword-carrying culture that works.Aside from the protagonist, the characters were a bit one dimensional, but that's somewhat a consequence of the first person perspective, which is handled very well. This is removed from five star territory for me mostly because I could completely predict the story arc chapters in advance. That's likely a consequence of having read too many stories in the genre and being hard to impress with originality. But again, everything in this story was done by the book and with the author's own touch.Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed that there isn't a second book. I'd probably purchase another one right now if there was. It's that kind of a book and from a very promising author. less
