review 1: That was a very entertaining little book. The characters were all well-round and at many times provoked strong responses while I read.I really enjoyed the fiction within the fiction and by the end would've liked to read about the faster days of terrorist Jan rather than the slow final days of the terrorist Jorg, but I think that it was set the way it was is the reason I feel that way.I know nothing of modern German terrorism, but it didn't hurt the level of enjoyment I got from the story. There was one curious idea or hint that popped up three separate times that is either a peculiarity or the writing something mixed in translation... I feel like the rampant incestuous inclining by three of the characters wasn't a translation thing and more societal thing, nobody acted on ... morethese thoughts, but didn't really fight against admitting them.Note to self: Look up if this is a Bernhard Schlink thing, a German thing or just a thing going around in the soggy old weekend cottage.A very interesting read.
review 2: I searched for this book for so long, hoping to score a nice used copy. All I could ever find was his book The Reader. Finally, I found it in Portland, at Powell's Books. Maybe I should have left it there. Nevertheless, it is an addition to my collection of stories about the radicalized left in Germany in the post-war years. This novel had an interesting premise but the characters were never fleshed out and the plot was more a theme or feeling, rather than something that moved from start to finish. If you aren't familiar with the left in Germany in the 1960s and 70s, you might feel a little confused at points when the greater world breaks through into the weekend. With a background on that era, the book does take on a little more depth but the exploration is purely where the reader's mind goes, with little to no direction from the author. The book never deeply explores the proposition of what happens and why during a newly-released terrorist's first weekend with his family, friends and potential exploiters. On a positive note, the translation by Shaun Whiteside flowed cleanly and quickly. less

Short book about a group of people I cared nothing about. The short book was too long.
