review 1: The listened to The Weekend as an audio book driving to and from Cleveland, so it's actually perfect that this post falls in the midst of Cleveland Week! I read this book because Schlink wrote one of my all-time favorite books, The Reader, which to me is one of the greatest books ever written (I have a thing for hopeless injustice, mistakes that ruin lives, and persistent love). While The Weekend didn't cover really any of those topics, it was still an interesting read and character study. The Weekend was translated from the German Das Wochenende. I think it would've been really interesting to read/listen to in German, though my language skills are definitely lagging from this time last year. I could maybe get through a chapter or two, albeit very slowly auf Deutsch. The pl... moreot centers on a group of adults who spend a weekend together in a cabin, reuniting friendships and otherwise. The weekend gathering is decided after Jörg is released from prison after twenty-four years, and it's still unknown whether or not he's a terrorist. I wasn't crazy about this book because to me, there lacked a real love interest, which I usually find adds momentum to a storyline. The book was mostly dialogue and was for the most part entertaining in a German-language sort of way.
review 2: A great book about friends gathering after 25 years to welcome one of them who's been freed after serving time for terrorist acts. The friends spend one weekend toghether and have to come to terms with their past an confront their feelings regarding terrorism, the government and their own lives. The story has a few unexpected twists and presents a very interesting point of view of germasn post WWII. less
