review 1: My friend Angela gave this to us and I really enjoyed the reading of it: there is something about books chosen by others. This contemporary weekend gathering of aged and former 'terrorists', (Baader-Meinhof members, symapthisers and survivors of 1970s dissent) questions the use of violence, the reliability of memory and the nature of friendship and, in a complex way, it explores personal redemption through 'truth' telling. The translation seems appropriate to the themes and is easy to read. Blissfully short to read, it lingers in one's thinking.
review 2: I really like Schlink's style of writing. But I'm a little biased. Having grown up in europe I tend to gravitate to authors who can take me back there and he does this for me. The story is not very climatic. B
... moreut it's really enjoyable nonetheless. The reason for the weekend and the people who are gathered to me was very interesting. I enjoyed the realistic way he made the characters interact it felt as if I'd had this kind of weekend with friends of my own at one time albeit for different reasons. For the same reason why people like movies like The Big Chill they will like this book. Although the drama is quite dialed down in this book. less

The writing was beautiful. Interesting story. Liked the ending. Equally as good as the reader.
