review 2: I picked this book up in Florence on the tail end of my trip and hadn't realized that this was a collection of novellas when I purchased it, but it was a nice choice for a vacation read. I really enjoyed the complexity of the characters and found myself making connections about the work as a whole and wondering about the editing
... moredecisions. Some stories were much more engaging than others and I was particularly fond of The Last Summer and The Night in Baden-Baden both for their reflections on the lies we justify to ourselves and the ways we sabotage our chances for true happiness. My favourite quote: " if you encounter the truth and it tortures you, that isn't what's torturing you, it's whatever the truth is about. And it always sets you free....He still didn't understand....maybe it was the other way around and you had to be free in order to be able to live with the truth" (67). The character in The Last Summer really stayed with me even as I read through the other story lines and all the way through to the last page. I loved the simultaneous beauty and joy of the exterior, the idyllic summer cottage retreat, juxtaposed with the dark and self-destructing interior life of this character. And I guess that juxtaposition of the beautiful landscape and flawed interior carried through to most of the other stories as well, although it struck me as particularly well written in this story. less
