review 1: This is like a dystopia of the dystopia - is that possible? This was more engaging than the first in the series... less predictable, more suspenseful. I could not see how they were going to resolve the problems presented - and it turns out that they didn't, leaving all resolution for the last book which I now have no choice but to read. Luckily, Beth Revis developed the characters enough in this book that I'm somewhat invested now and want to find out what happens.
review 2: Well. When I read Across the Universe, I had some problems with it, but they were easily overlooked. I don't know why A Million Suns is different, but I was annoyed while reading it.Similar to the first book, the plot was interesting, and the twists were pretty cool. What bothered me was
... morethis clue hunt Orion left Amy on. What? It was just added to give the story a plot, but the whole time I was thinking "this is so stupid". It made absolutely no sense that he'd take the time and leave clues for her - especially such hard ones. The idea of the inhabitants of Godspeed getting restless and rebellions threatened should have been the main storyline. That would've been really interesting. Instead, way too much time is devoted to the clue hunt, and Elder's plot also falls short. He doesn't DO anything. He's constantly saying that the people of Godspeed don't realize all the work he's doing, but we never actually see him do anything, or think of the future. Elder's storyline should have been the best part of this book, but somehow even that was poorly done.I didn't realize in the first book how absolutely nothing Elder and Amy are. Neither of them have personalities. They don't even have annoying personalities, they are just there. Amy makes no effort to get along with the people. I understand that they think she's a freak, but she never even attempts to talk to them or get to know them. She's always going on about how she won't hide out in her room. No, instead she hides in the Recorder Hall. And Elder. Oh, Elder. I really wanted to like him, and I sometimes do, but I just can't stand how he acted as a leader and how he fought the rebellions. He never does anything, never acts. The only thing he did was get a police force or tell everyone on the ship a secret without thinking of consequences. The problem with Elder is that he never grows into a leader. I kept on waiting for him to realize something, to suddenly take charge and make stuff happen. I thought during the unrest in this book, he'd suddenly get up and be a leader, but that never happened. I think he was supposed to always be a leader, right from the beginning, but he wasn't.A quick word on the romance: The word "love" shouldn't be in this book. In Across the Universe, I just got the sense that Elder was into Amy, and she kind of liked him, but wasn't interested in a relationship. But now "love" is being thrown around. I get that they like each other and they've known each other for three months, but those three months happened "off screen". Elder and Amy knew each other for days in the first book, then three months later, A Million Suns happens. Whatever interaction they had between the first and second book doesn't count in selling me on their "love". It was so irritating to hear Elder and Amy think of how they love each other. There was some good in this story, believe it or not. I loved the twists (excluding the last one), and for all its faults, A Million Suns is strangely easy to read. What bothers me about this series is that it could be so good. If the characters were more dynamic, the romance somewhat realistic, and more time spent on the unrest of the citizens of Godspeed, it could have be really good. This book deserves a 2 star, but for some reason I'm giving it a 3. I think because I actually want to finish the series, or because I have a good enough imagination to change what I don't like about it in my head. This series is interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. less
