review 1: What fun in the fictional hill station Hamara Nagar in the cool hills of India! Scottish and sixtyish, Jana Bibi (Janet Laird to her very proper son back in Scotland) takes on the Jolly Grant house her grandfather willed her and among her household is Mr Ganguly, the amazing parrot with the English/Hindi vocabulary and irrepressible little Tilku, the errand boy who brightens every day. The characters are so colorful they really overshadow Jana Bibi, who holds her own by holding them together. Betsy Woodman keeps herself out of the story, letting the sounds and sights of India captivate us as if we were there. Happy read!
review 2: I decide to read this book because I just have won the third book in this series. And I am glad I did because it turned out to be a
... morevery entertaining read about a lady my age ( always nice to have someone your own age having all those adventures) who inherit a house in a small Indian town from her grandfather, makes friends among the townpeople, muslim, hindu and christian and ends up to be a fortune teller Jana Bibi in order to safe the town by putting it on the map.....and then I didn't even mentioned the parrot Mr Ganguly who is the hero of the story indeed! less
