review 1: I was absolutely enchanted from the first word on the first page to the last word on the last page! I admit I initially picked up the book because the cover captivated me - it was bright, colorful, and exotic. When I saw that the story took place in India I was intrigued, and when I saw that it was set in the 1960's, I was sold because I love the mid-20th century for book settings. The date and place aside, Jana Bibi's Excellent Fortunes gave me exactly what I want in a novel - a cast of characters who welcome me into their community. I understand that this was the author's first book - amazing! I never would have guessed that this was a debut novel. I highly recommend it.
review 2: Elizabeth Berg said this is a charming, engaging, and utterly delightful novel.
... more I agree with her. A Scottish woman who has lived most of her adult life in India settles in a small town in the Himalayas. The author writes from her experiences growing up in India. I'm happy to say this is the first in a series and the next book has been published. If you have enjoyed Phillip Gulley and Alexander McCall Smith, you will surely love this book as I have. less
