review 1: What a thoroughly enjoyable book! The characters were delightful, even the disagreeable ones, but especially Lucy, the pregnant giant anteater! She is at first accused of killing Grayson Harrill, but it's soon established that he fell into her enclosure at the zoo after being shot. Zookeeper Teddy Bentley is a likable though nosy heroine who cares so much for Lucy and the other animals that she is determined to find the killer before the zoo is forced to get rid of the animal or close the doors. I enjoyed all the info about the animals, never having had much reason to learn about anteaters, but especially because the author lives in the Phoenix area and bases her animal characters on actual inhabitants of the Phoenix Zoo! Looking forward to more of these enjoyable sto... moreries!
review 2: My mystery book club assigned us all to read a mystery set in either a zoo or circus. In my search I discovered Betty Webb's series about Gunn Zoo and animal caretaker Teddy Bentley. I enjoyed the California coastal setting, Teddy's quirky family, the character development of the zoo community, Teddy's houseboat live aboard neighborhood, and the descriptions of animal behavior. I will probably read the nest book in the series. less
