review 1: This novella reminded me a bit of the movie Black Swan (in a less psychotic way), and the parts detailing the intense feelings of the main character were interesting to read. The rest of it, describing operatic singing, for example, was strikingly boring. I finished the book two days ago and couldn't remember the end; when I re-read it to write a review, it was something dramatic enough that I should have remembered it. I don't know if something was lost in translation, but there was definitely something missing.
review 2: I've been having a rough go of it with books by Chinese authors... I really have yet to find a single one that I particularly enjoy, and I can't figure out how to deattach enough from my love of American/Western narrative to be able to apprec... moreiate Chinese literature. And in the meantime, I keep reading Chinese novels and not liking them. I'm hoping to reach some critical mass where all of a sudden I've read enough that I get them. I'll let you know... less
