review 1: Actual rating: 3.5Je ziet het ambitieuze leven van een opera zangeres die een glorieuze carrière naar de knoppen heeft gewerkt door o.a. hoogmoed. Maar een passie kan je niet zomaar blussen. Gebroken en innerlijk dood als ze zich voelde, geeft ze les in een operaschool. Hiermee probeert ze toch haar door haar leerlingen door te vloeien en zo aan haar passie geen einde te brengen. Ze krijgt een tweede kans, ze grijpt die. Hoewel ze voor het goede is veranderd, blijft ze in moeilijkheden met haarzelf. Het gaat zo ver dat ze haar eigen leven op het spel zet.Ik quoteer even wat uit de film: Moulin Rouge: "The show must go on."
review 2: Perhaps deserves 2.5 stars. "The Moon Opera" is a thin, fairly quick read about a Beijing opera singer who specializes in playin... moreg the role of Chang'e, the mythological woman who stole an elixir of immortality and fled to the moon where she lives forever in isolated beauty. The author is obviously an affecionado of Beijing opera, and the reader comes away from the novel with a greater appreciation of the subtleties of this art form. The larger topic, however, is what I would call "pedagogical genealogy"--the passing of knowledge or skill from one generation to another and the love-hate relationship it so often fosters between the teacher and the student as the former comes to realize he (or in this case "she") is training his replacement. One of my more generous teachers once said: "If you students don't stand on my shoulders I have failed." A noble sentiment. But those who stand on your shoulders do weigh you down, as this novel demonstrates. less
