review 1: Five stars for the story of Ja-Hee.Maybe two stars for the story of the granddaughter. Her story was awkward, dull, and unnecessary; whereas the grandmother's story was rich, terrifying, and crisp. I understand the need to have the voices of different characters sound unique, but Anna's voice was weak and made me want to thumb ahead to where her grandmother spoke again. I cared not at all for Anna, or her tale.Having said that, Ja-Hee's story brought to light a piece of history I had never heard of: the Comfort Women. It's horrifying to think that this tale is a shadow of real women's lives. The author did a great job bringing to light a very controversial and difficult subject.
review 2: I finished this book in one sitting--immediately engaging., lots of histo
... morerical information (hard to imagine this happening just a few generations ago), the story is fantastically written. Although, at times, it was almost too disturbing to continue reading, my stomach churned at multiple points. I am glad I did though, it is a important story that the world can learn from, and the ending was satisfying. less
