review 1: A sad story of Sammie Bell, 16 year old daughter of 2 'rounders'/scammers who tries to figure out where she fits in one summer. She wants to be taken away by her father while her mother deals with depression and alcoholism. She really doesn't know any other life and despises the 'normal' life of her friend's family where she goes to live for a few weeks. Good character description and writing emphasizes Sammie's dilemma.
review 2: Sammie has got it rough, her mom wants to kill herself and she has little interaction with her father - both are con artists, which has left an imprint on Sammie and her outlook on life and its expectations (or the lack there of). Loved the character development, as well as, the landscape of Burnaby/Vancouver with Sammie's trapsing
... mores. Take in how Sammie deals with her relationships with her mom/dad and how she wants to fit in and be normal with her foster family. Enjoyed! less

Could have easily been published as YA. Glad to see it recognized on the Giller Longlist.
gabby
Enjoyed it. Hard to believe the loyalty to the worthless parents. Liked the local setting.
Athena
Really well written and readable, but once again I didn't like the non-ending.
weeshy
A straight-up story with a wise and tender heart.
Brooke
Possibly better enjoyed by a juvenile reader.
