review 1: I couldn't help but think of John Updike's short story A&P while reading this. James is like a modern day Sammy. So that I liked because it's one of my favorite short stories. It also probably helps that the narrator's political beliefs sound fairly close to my own. Sometimes it got a little heavy in the angsty melodramatic teen department but then again, if I were still a teen, I probably would really dig that aspect. Other than that the book was pretty amusing most of the way through. Brought back some memories of my own sad state teenage years as well. All in all it's a quick read and good fun. What's not to like? Plus now I've added Black Elk Speaks to my Want To Read list.
review 2: Destroy All Cars is a hilarious coming of age story. I found myse
... morelf cracking up throughout the entire book. The main character, James, is a ranting and heartbroken teenager-- trying to come to terms with his feelings toward his ex-girlfriend, Sadie. Most of his rants come through in his quirky and endearing essays he has written for his English class.I gave this book 3 stars because I found that while James does have character flaws (he's hypocritical, whiny, shallow, etc.)-- who isn't?-- I felt that Mr. Nelson could have done a better job of using these flaws to explicitly connect James to the realities of coming of age...That said, I did enjoy watching James growing up over the course of the novel and self discovery... less

This book was awesome. Really funny, the kind of humor I'm looking for in a main character.

One of the books A recommends to Rhiannon in Every Day, so I'm interested. :D
