review 1: The Freak Observer is the story of Loa, a highschool girl, who has lost a lot in the ways of death and poverty. I didn't like this book. Way too many issues for 200 pages and none of them very well tackled. Too much death and horrible parents to boot in one little novel can made the storyline seem a little unrealistic. I felt the ending was rushed, out of no where and too simplistic and Woolston's writing style was very choppy and distracting. And why the underage drinking? It was talked about in passing maybe three times in the book, seemed like a big issue, but never really resolved.
review 2: You should read this. The title is The Freak Observer but the title doesn’t mean what you think it means. This slim 200 page book was a fast read and really pac
... moreked a punch. I would compare it to Please Ignore Vera Dietz. I don’t want to really say what it’s about because you should just read it. It is narrated by a high school girl who is dealing with some losses and changes but it is not a typical YA plot. The narrative voice is really good It’s straight realistic fiction but it is quirky and the characters seem so real. The book does not feel “plotted”. It feels like life. The cover art will make sense after you read it, but just FYI it is not a horror book or anything like that. You should read it. less
