review 1: Very fast-paced special forces story that I really enjoyed! The only Bob Mayer books I had previously read were the three books he co-wrote with Jennifer Crusie. All three of those were fun, and I could tell (having read so many Crusie novels) which portions of those he had written; and one of those three -- Wild Ride -- is one of my favorite books. So, when I got Eyes of the Hammer as a free Kindle download, I knew it would be worth checking out, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Mayer is a former green beret himself, and writes about covert ops in a realistic, believable fashion, but doesn't neglect character development. A real page turner; recommended!
review 2: I got this book for free from Amazon, don't know if it's still there for free or not but
... moreit's still worth three or four dollars. I'm not sure what number this is in the series but it is part of a larger series. Judging by the author bio this is the real deal. Mayer graduated from West Point and was also in the special forces so it would not surprise me if there was a lot of truth in this series. I got a little confused by some of the military lingo but not enough that I was lost. It did slow me down a little but I still enjoyed the book. If I were to read more in this series or even in this genre I don't think I would have had a problem with the languauge usage but I found myself flipping back a page or two looking for explanations. Sometimes I found one and sometimes I didn't but I must repeat that it did not keep me from enjoying the book. The action was smooth and the suspense was great. I did enjoy reading about all of the gear and how the "new" army works. I have read quite a bit about WW II and Vietnam so I was surprised at how far "war" has come. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would give it a 3.75 if possible but I will round it up to 4. If you like military action books then this series would be a good one to check out. less
