review 1: A 3.5 star review. This book is filled with interesting tidbits about the making of the movies. The first part describes the making of the 8 movies, with a chapter dedicated to each movie. The second part describes the characters, the sets and the costumes.I was really pleased to get my hands on this book, and though it is a MAMMOTH of a book, it was easily read and only heavy in the physical sense. But if you've spent a lot of time online during the making of the movies, there actually isn't all that much new information to be gained from this book. And - more importantly - many of the anecdotes about the various characters that I'd found online and been looking forward to seeing in the book, had actually been left out. Of course I can understand that they couldn't include ... moreeverything, so it is just a shame that I would have preferred that part of "behind the scenes" than descriptions of what went into making the costumes and sets
review 2: First of all, this book is a monster. I have whole backpacks full of textbooks that weigh less than this monster. That said, it is jam-packed with information about the filming of all eight movies. It's arranged nicely, with seven chapters on the actual process of making each book into a movie (or movies, in the case of "Deathly Hallows"), then a whole back section on costumes, set design, etc. You'll get some insight into each part of the filmmaking process, from auditions and casting to visual and makeup FX. Expect a few secrets to be revealed, and loads of pretty pictures.I would have appreciated some more time spent on the design-half of the book, as that's what really interests me about filmmaking. Sure, the actors and their thoughts on the process are interesting, but after a while (especially when you're talking about eight movies), they're really just saying the same thing over and over again. I want to see details of the costumes, or sets, or props, and that was sadly lacking here. Sure, you got some, but not enough. I'm a junkie.Might not be worth the $80 list price, but boy is it a happy day when this shows up on your library's hold shelf with your name on it. Enjoy. less
