review 1: This author's print illustrations remind me of Ashley Wolff's and Mary Azarian's illustrative styles (and each of them also has illustrated a gardening book!). This author's text is lyrical, free verse. I especially liked her description: "Our garden sings with buzzing bees, with rustling leaves, and cawing crows, with gentle rain and whirring wings..." This book, as well as some of the other gardening selections, emphasize how much of gardening is waiting for the crops to grow.
review 2: I ended up loving it, once I turned to the first page. The cover illustration didn’t appeal to me for some reason, but then I turned to the title page and saw all the miniature pictures (and the inside front cover with the bunny) and fell in love with them, and then I enjoye... mored all the pictures, particularly of the dog, bunny, and all the plants. I love how in the story the friends are of different sexes and different races. I really appreciate how the process of gardening is shown, the work, the patience required, and the satisfaction of harvest, and of waiting.I love all the facts at the end, written in pictures of what look like seed packs. I appreciated how when the plants are shown in progress, they are labeled by what plant is growing. I love how all the vegetables look so mouthwateringly tempting to eat.This is a wonderful story about gardening and its cycles, about friendship, about families, and about working together for a long term goal. It’s a special book, and can be enjoyed on so many levels by kids of such a wide age range. I think I would have LOVED it when I was aged 4-9 or even 10. 4 ½ stars less
