review 1: Okay, wow. I just finished the book. And let me say that this is not a classical old-young bounding story. It was dark. It was blue. It was pink. The suspension of disbelief never stopped occurring and disappearing like a red light coming from a plane flying thousands of feets up away in the sky, when I was reading the book. It was a tale, a story, and a novel. It was beautiful but weird and, oh God, dark. It was dark and light and the same time. I just finished the book and I am floating in an emptiness. The manner of writing was original. Just original. Recommend it without a doubt. Read it like you are reading a bitter-sweet tale rather than a novel.
review 2: This is a really hard book to review. There is no doubt that it is well written and cleverly done.
... moreBut it was not a pleasant read and really I just wanted it to finish. What the author has done brilliantly though is capture the insidious awfulness of abuse. Putting aside the sexual aspect (the extent of which, in this story, is unclear), it is the way in which Lamb captures and messes with Tommie's mind & sense of self that is so horrible. Nothing that he does or says is overtly cruel and this is its (and his) power - like tentacles or poison injected slowly into the brain. It is clear that Lamb is also suffering (he has 'issues'); nonetheless it is equally clear that he knows what he is doing, what he does ... I found him despicable and pathetic and I swore at him as I read. So I give the book 3 stars because I really didn't 'like' it; I realise though that this is unfair, that I am failing to distinguish between my dislike for the character and the work of the author. Perhaps I will come back to this review later and rethink it ... but, right now, having just finished the book, I just want to be done with it ... less

This is a very creepy book, but with a lot to discuss. It definitely held my interest.
