review 1: Originally posted at readbetweenthebooks91.blogspot.com4.5/5 stars!In the Land of Magnanthia really blew me away. It was smart, fun and magical. B.R. Maul wrote about a magnificent world and characters that you will fall in love with.I had high hopes for this book but with all the books that I accepted for review failed to impress me lately, so I was definitely nervous. I started the book with the wrong attitude, unfortunately, but In the Land of Magnanthia just sucked me in. From the first page I forced into this world that I knew nothing about and I was absolutely intrigued and wanted to know more. We have our main hero, Simon. He’s a little nerdy, but aren’t we all. He’s in choir and doesn’t have many friends. But if I’m telling the truth, I related to ... morehim on every single level. Simon is normal, there’s nothing really special about him, but his character is remarkable. He cares about his friend Jessica, and his dad. He pretty much drops everything to go and save this unknown world with people he hasn’t met before. Sure, he has a little trust issues, but who wouldn’t in this situation.Next up, Jak. I loved Jak. I’m not sure if I was supposed to or not but I did. Sure, he’s a little spoiled but he was just so freaking interesting. And on a whole other subject, I do tend to fall for the bad boys.In the Land of Magnanthia is told from two POVs, Simons and Jaks. Good vs Evil. It was so great to read about both sides because that rarely happens in a book. It’s usually just the good side with a few bad things happening a long the way with that one mind altering event that happens at the end that will change the main characters life as s/he knows it. This book didn’t exactly follow that formula. And holy crap was it a roller coaster ride. About every other chapter was a different perspective. We would read about Simon in Magnanthia with his ‘company’ and then Jak and all the troubles that he has to face in Bedlam. It was just spectacular. The side characters were great too, although I do wish that we could have learned a bit more about each of them. But since this is the first book in series, there was a lot of world building and just setting up the whole problem that is in Magnanthia and getting to know Simon. So, hopefully we will get to know more about Sonica, Thianna, Heaton, Domic, and Slade in the future books.Magnanthia sounds like such a magical world and Maul definitely hit it out of the park with the way he described this beautiful world. His style of writing is wonderful and at one point he literally almost had me in tears because of a tree. That’s right folks, a tree. This world that he has created has so much depth and there’s so much terminology that just sucks you into this world. I can’t wait until I can read the next book because In the Land of Magnanthia ended on a bit of a cliffhanger.If you enjoy fantasy books such as Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia. Even Percy Jackson. Then I would definitely recommend this book. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
review 2: I was pleasantly captivated in B. R. Maul’s tale of Portals, Passages, & Pathways (In the Land of Magnanthia) in which two teenagers cross into the magical land. One, the nerdy kid who’s in the school choir has, without his knowledge, been groomed to bear one of the guardian rings of affinity Simon was supposed to trained for two years, but a cracked portal meant things had to be moved up and so he was rushed through an underwater portal to avoid the evil enemy and has to come to term with well-meaning advisors who wish him wel, and home-sickness. Jak, a rich bratty kid taught by tutors and ignored by his family, is kidnaped into the same world and has to survive a dangerous maze. Only one of the seven entering the maze will survive to be given magic. In spite of being generic, and a bit awkward in spots, I found the tale fun.
