November 2017 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Teresa A., Secretary

The Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guilt met on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church. Thirty-five (35) members were in attendance, and we welcomed one new member, Rachel D. and three (3) guests. Our social refreshments were provided by Viv B. and Heather B. who served deviled eggs, crackers, carrot chips, dip, and a variety of delicious cookies.  President Kathy C. thanked the members who provided this month’s treats. Guests were also introduced.

Remember that the guild now has ten (10) books which can be checked out by members. A $5 deposit is required, and it will be refunded if the book is brought back the following meeting. If not returned the month after borrowing, the deposit will be retained in the library account. See Carol B., is the guild librarian if you would like to check out a book.

Mark your calendars, Viv B. shared there will be a bus trip to the International Quilt Festival on April 12, 2018.  There will be more information about the trip at our January meeting.

Cindy R. announced the Heartbeat quilts be returned by our next meeting on January 23rd.   There will be a Sew Day to work on Heartbeat Quilts on Saturday, January 20th at the church from 9:00 – 3:00.

We also collected fat quarters for the Santa Rosa Quilt Guild whose members lost so much in the recent California fires.

Kathy C. shared with the members that the church does not charge us to use their room for our meetings or workshops, so we are making a Christmas donation to the church.  She had a card available for those in attendance to sign.

There was no winner for the Block Lotto this month since the blocks were for a quilt that will be sent to the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild for the victims and first responders to The Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting last month.  Thank you Kris Z. for volunteering to sew the quilt top for us!

The Block Lotto block for our next meeting is a traditional block made into a modern block.  Viv chose a Churn Dash as the traditional block and then gave it a modern look.  A great article with ideas is on the Modern Quilt Guild website – you can view the article here.  If you want to download it, you will need to sign in.

Tonight was our Pouch Swap.  We had about 20 people participate.  Everyone who brought a bag drew a number to determine the order of selecting a brown paper bag with a pouch.  Then everyone opened and held up their bags to find who made it and then meet the person who received their pouch.  Everyone had a fun time – it was like opening a mystery gift!    There were lots of cute and beautiful bags.

We saw some beautiful quilts, pillows and bags shared tonight for Show and Tell.   Be sure and check out the pictures!

After the break, winners for raffles were announced and survey responses tallied/reported.

We had thirty three responses to the survey question, “Which projects would you like to do at our next project workshop?  There were two choices – project bag or notebook cover.

Results:
Project Bag                            15
Notebook Cover                   18
It was suggested by Nancy P we do both projects at the spring workshop day.  Kathy C asked for a show of hands of who would be interested in making both and the majority of members raised their hands.  So we will be making two projects!!!

The winner of our survey raffle and fabric raffle was – Danner B.  (Too bad she didn’t buy a lottery ticket!)

Kathy C. and Nancy P. shared some examples of Traditional Modern quilts made by themselves and Donna L. to coincide with our program topic – “Making Traditional Modern” – a webinar by Shannon Page of the Dallas Modern Quilt Guild.  We watched only a portion of the webinar where Shannon shared ways to take a traditional block and how it can be transitioned into a modern quilt by changing the square to have some of the elements used in modern quilts.   Including, but not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.
