review 1: There are many things I appreciated in this story. I appreciated that 50% percent of the profits from this book is donated to several charity organisations such as Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. I felt good that I played a part in helping those who need support. This story touches social issues such as flaws in health care system to raise my awareness to appreciate what the writer was trying to do by donating part of the profits. I did not know that there were flaws that effected the veterans as well as those with serious health issues in America. That part made me very sad.Brad Vance touched two huge issues in his story boldly with compassion by bringing two wounded heroes; Tom as a gay veteran in closet lost his legs in Afghanistan and was struggling with PTSD... more. His experience in coming to terms with his losses made my heart ache for him. He felt real to me. The other wounded hero in the story is Jamie who is a lonely HIV positive single male. Jamie felt real to me too to the point when he burst into tears in the shower somewhere in the story, I was also crying with him. His sense of loneliness broke my heart....so to think Brad Vance brought them together in his story made me glued to my chair to read the whole story for the second time! However, this story is not a sad story where you find yourself depressed and in despair. There is a beautiful balance in the story of these two wounded souls. There is friendship, dry humor, warmth, some sensuality and certainly love in the story and not just between Jamie and Tom. The characters were well established. The story line was flowing all the way through. I would have loved to know more about Tom and Jamie after they visited Tom's parents. I think that this story needs some domestic scenes of Tom and Jamie as a couple at the very end. Don't get me wrong, the end is great but left me hungry for more.I shall read this story again another time because it is a wonderful story that did not shy away from social issues.
review 2: Damn Brad Vance for making me cry...The story of Tom and Jamie, one a soldier maimed in Afghanistan, the other is HIV positive. It doesn't sound like the likely basis for an uplifting love story, but this is a stunning read, by turns erotic, funny, moving but above all, it's REAL. Definitely the best gay novel I've read this year.Actually, make that one of the best novels I've read this year, and I read A LOT... If you only read one M/M romance this year, please, please make it this one. And half the royalties go to the IAVA and Wounded Warrier projects, so that's an even better reason to buy it. less
