review 2: the pets is a sort of screwball comedy that consistently keeps you on edge because of the volatility that olafsson imbues his characters with. its a book about a man who, upon returning from vacation, is shocked to find an old friend (one that he doesnt want to see) visits him. our protagonist hides from this visitor, who enters his house through the window
... morewith the pretense of waiting. The house slowly amasses guests while our protagonist hides under his own bed. the premise is that of a wacky 50,s comedy film, but there is a real pathos and beneath the surface anger behind the characters that almost, at points, it feels like a thriller. there is also a private loneliness to this book that feels even more real because it never gets aired out, the sort of frantic loneliness of someone who doesnt know his real friends, and the perversity of what happens when you dont know you're being watched and the discomfort of knowing what someone would do in your house if left to their own devices, with your friends. its a comedy, but a scary one. less
