review 1: Pure awesome. Dark dark humor found from crossing Sherlock with ER, with a dose of King Arthur and Cthulhu. The idea of looking at supernatural creatures through the lens of science has been done before, but never so well, and never so entertainingly. Dr. Morrow is fascinating, and Penny Dreadful and Dr. Gast (among other supporting characters) are all vibrant creations. The stories are creative and funny, and action-packed; just a great mix. I laughed out loud at several points (the response when asked if vampires Sparkled was pure genius), and just fully bought into it. Even the concept art in the bonus section was both fascinating and funny. I'd heard good things about this series before, but I know now that I will have to follow this book going forward. Just pur... moree dark joy.
review 2: I wasn't too sure about this at first, but quickly grew to love the style of it. It makes all the horror elements and mystical things a clinical problem, with medicine (however mystical itself) to cure the maladies of everything from possession to vampirism. The artwork was absolutely phenomenal. The characters were interesting and fairly unique (the least of which is the GI Joe paramedic assistant, but he's still good). I'd definitely look forward to the next book in this series. less
