review 1: I usually reserve the one star ratings for books so terrible I can't even get myself to finish them, but I'll make an exception.Spoilers below, I'm on mobile and can't be bothered to figure out how to mark them properly. This book started good! I liked the super natural stuff. And... yeah, that's about it. The insta-love was an insta-turnoff for me, but I might have gotten over that if Brett hasn't spent most of the book panicking and if the characters had actually done anything. One of my major pet peeves its when characters don't communicate. Well, this entire book is people refusing to share information that would be pretty pertinent. Brett never mentions that thing in the water, Finn & co don't bother telling Brett about all the magical backstory, Finn hears voices and ... morekeeps it silent, those Nymphs are the most annoying form of all-knowing seers that refuse to say anything straight. And what was the point of Finn going to The Square? He doesn't learn anything, the werewolf doesn't do anything, nobody finds out that he went.Oh, sure, he picked up a "presence"... that doesn't get explained, and is only mentioned for a page or so. In fact, when it's first shown to the reader, Finn casually says that it had been happening for a while.I also would not have been able to tell you the difference between the two leads, their voices were pretty identical. I don't know why Finn's pov was even included in this, it was such a waste of time since nothing happens.I kept holding out that the ending would answer some questions, but nope. Random break up and then disappearing into the ocean. What a disappointing waste of time.
review 2: This isn't quite my genre, I don't normally read supernatural tales. I know the author, and enjoyed his 1st novel, so decided to give this series a try. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. There is an ongoing love story, with well developed and colorful characters. There's a slowly building sub-plot, along with a lot of interesting short term conflicts and trials. I have gotten hooked on finding out what happens. I should mention there is some fairly graphic sexual content, much of it is not hetero, so reader be forewarned (or titillated, depending on your viewpoint). less
