review 1: I picked up this book after recently meeting the author through a mutual friend, as the description of her work sounded interesting plus she's written several Valdemar stories that I've enjoyed. The book did not disappoint me and is an excellent combination of mystical and science around the story of what could happen at the 2012 end of the Mayan calendar. The main characters are Alice and her young daughter Nixie, who are in Mexico in December 2012 because Alice is a researcher of the ancient star alignments. As December 21 approaches, strange things happen around Nixie to the point of time travel back to when the Mayans were at the height of their power at the last turning of the calendar, and the interactions between the people of both times become more important as ... morethe days pass. I really liked how the time travel was handled as the circumstances changed, and I also very much enjoyed how the past story was wrapped up while the current story was left open. The handling of the various international dignitaries in the current time story was well done and added a bit of current events and topics without being overwhelming. I loved the imagery of several scenes, especially those involving water and the one that involves the power of social media (don't want to spoiler!). The characters were well developed and interesting, and changed appropriately for the time period and occurrences that the story covers. I would definitely recommend this book to those who like fantasy, science, and maybe a little mystical predictions about the Mayan calendar and culture.
review 2: I received this book for free as a Good Reads First Read.I had a bit of trouble getting into the book at the start because I know practically nothing about the Mayan culture however, as the book progressed I did pick up some basic knowledge about the culture. I do still feel like the book could have been a bit longer & included some more explanations. Overall, it is an interesting take on the end of the Mayan calendar! less
