review 1: The story started off with some promise, I plodded on and on with this book just waiting for something to happen. In the end I had to speed read the remaining chapters as it bored me to tears. I didn't find the story plausable. For instance it would have been unheard of for a young married woman with a devoted husband for him to just leave her to her own devices fending for herself on the island of Crete, especially in the 1930s. Yes, there were very vivid descriptions of Crete, but after a while there was far too much describing the landscape and not much happening. I found the story flat, depressing and totally unrealistic, to the extent of yawning and dozing off. A good read if you need to get to sleep.
review 2: I really loved this book from start to fini
... moresh, although the ending seemed a little hurried.Having been to Crete it was so easy to imaginePano Panagia and the mountains, caves and beaches in the surrounding area.I love the. References to Cretan customs and recipes along with the descriptions of the flora and fauna. The characters were all so believe able with the exception of Hugh whose dialogue seemed a bit stereotypical of an upper class English diplomat. The story centred on the contrasting lives of Heavenly and Anthi. They both appeared to be very strong women with different marriage problems, neither of them enjoyed the physical side of their relationships. The outbreak of war tests them to the limits with much in the way of sacrifices being made.A thoroughly good read. less

Great historical story set in Crete during WW2. Love and loss, very gripping but harrowing.

Realised I had read it before but it didn't distract from the fact it's a good read
