review 1: this is not a story, it's a semi-porn infomercial. it's the kind of story a (good) sex-ed would let you read to get informed. so yes, in that sense it probably fits the point of the project, get people educated about sex. but it miss the point of making it really engaging. this was basically just a way to throw information at you in a way that is not an article. there was no actual narrative and i was not even once emotional invested in the 'story'. if this is how Russel talks on those books as well, he's boring, he's too naive and uncomplicated. too many times in this story his voice seemed very unnatural, you know some of his inside voice wasn't actually his thoughts, but information the writer wanted to convey to the reader. what worries me most about reading his actual... more work are the sex scenes, they just seemed like porn, like a bad pwp from a very beginner writer who's very likely never had sex themselves. where are the emotions? it almost felt like a synopsis for soft porn. as said about 50 shades - we all read better pwp, and we all wrote better pwp. also, i know this was written for gay readers, but i think addressing hetero sexuality would have helped sense i'm sure bi (and straight) people are also among the readers of Hartinger. everything about this story was too plain, too simple, so unsophisticated. and it made me afraid of reading Geography Club which i have been very much looking forward to.making this into an actual story, not a told lecture could have helped a lot more. right now it just gives information, i don't think it would convince anyone who thought the risk is so small what ever they'd take their chance, change their mind. making the reader feel for Russel. just make him run away cause he's too scared. make him talk to his friends and get misinformed, let him fight with web cause he was forced to do something he didn't do. which also brings me to this - i don't care that hartinger wrote 'oh opps it was wrong what web did to Russel' that was a very very *very* shitty way to deal with such incidents. i really hoped this story would focus much more on the emotional aspect of safe sex. about not letting people take advantage of you, about knowing that even though you might like something, it could be bad for you. older and/or more experienced partners can take advantage of one's inexperience and convince them to participate in acts they do not want to. (that happened to pretty much every girl i know. me included). Russel should not have been so accepting of the fact his wish was violently disregarded because he ended up enjoying it. this is the exact same shit that made the entire world of fanfic-writers go against 50 shades.
review 2: Okay. So I loved the first three books in the series. Haven't read the fourth yet. I found this and bought it because it was short and I figured why not. I enjoyed it and liked it, but didn't love it. Yes, I get that the story is meant to be a PSA about safe sex. And it was interesting to see exactly what Russell got up to with his boyfriends. But the way the information was presented was just too preachy for me, and I grew quickly bored. While the information is good and Russell's discomfort was evident - as was mine - I just thought maybe it could have been handled a little differently. Younger fans of the series should avoid this book until they're older because of the explicit language in it. But then again if they're mature enough, I guess this gets the point across rather bluntly and holds no punches. And if they're uncomfortable with the language, then they shouldn't be thinking about having sex in the first place... less
