review 1: I think I love my book club. This isn't a book I would have probably picked up on my own, but am so glad I read it as a book club pick. It's hard to categorize, or really even summarize, but it tells wonderful tales of ordinary, yet extraordinary, people in a small coastal Oregon town. Some of the individuals have a Native American background and that plays out wonderfully as the history (the "stories") of the town is presented, but the current mix of citizens is quite a cross-section of different cultures. The author uses a hard-to-describe style that just has to be read to be appreciated. There are sections that are more poetry than narrative. Basically, it was quite wonderful in a very unique way.
review 2: A poetic and rich read, flow was so beautiful
... morely artistic until about 2/3 through, but it was still a joy to read. Loved the fanciful combo of espiritu, mind-connectedness, and talking animals....it all worked together so well. Deep and darker thoughts were balanced with positives in real life that keep us hoping for the best each day. Unlike most other books I've read in a long time; I would say falls into similar category of The Sound and the Fury & The River Why. It will leave a lasting impression if you are able to truly appreciate the gift this author has shared in this story. less
