review 1: Oh I loved this book. It was admittedly hard to get into at first; before Declan's life got interesting and complicated, I thought we were heading into a reprise of Mink River (though I cant imagine that book ever being reprised, it is such an edifice of its own standing) and Old Man and the Sea. BUT, THEN it got interesting, while retaining Doyle's beautiful, wry, engaging, speak-directly-to-your-heart prose. Every time you think he cant come up with another person as nearly as unique as the last character you met- well, you are proven wrong. I just love his characters. I want to hang out with them on islands and at potluck dinners. I want to be stuck on boats with them for weeks. I just want to jump right in to the pages of his books and sit down with his characters and ... morehave conversations. And you sort of do when you read this. Which is what is so amazingly wonderful about Brian Doyle. Give me more!!!
review 2: I don't even feel worthy to write a review of this book. I don't have the words to say what it made me feel and, unlike the author, I'm not good at making up words of my own. This book is whimsical yet deep at the same time. A great example of this is something said by the minister, a man who would like to somehow create the nation of Pacifica, a perfect, peaceful, imaginative nation. After telling Declan of his dreams and ambitions for this nation, the minister points out "if we do not dream, then I think perhaps we are misusing our heads. They are not on our shoulders only to be farms for hair". This book is a great reminder to me personally that I need to never stop dreaming. I don't know how useful this review will be but I want to recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of that which is the opposite of ordinary, anyone who wants something different to read. I read so many books and I remember very little about most of them because they made absolutely no impact on me. The Plover is a book that will remain with me, a book that I will recommend over and over to anyone I feel has the intelligence to appreciate it. less
