review 1: The first 300 or so pages of this book were incredibly average. I think I probably would have stopped reading if not for 2 things: this book was given to me by a close friend who sent it all the way from Perth in the mail, and it is set in Auckland - the area I'm currently living. It's always fun to read a novel where you can relate to the location when most books are set in America or England where I've never been. The last 50 or so pages, though, were really good! I'll leave it up to you whether you think 300 boring pages make up for 50 good ones. The rest of this review will have spoilers (last time I tried the html it didn't work, so I'll stick with the old-fashioned way).My favourite part of the book was absolutely the scene in the marae when the elders talked to Rebec... moreca and then Tane. Though I'm a pakeha and have spent most of my life in Australia so can't really judge, I think this book treated Maori culture very respectfully and another favourite scene was the two brothers sharing a hongi before descending the skytower to face their probable deaths. Cool scenes like that make me think this book would make a good graphic novel - if you skip the first 70% of the book.
review 2: The Tomorrow Code marks Brian Falkner's introduction into the U.S, and boy, what an entrance. It starts off messy, shoving bland characterizations, unlikable (at the time) characters, and messy storytelling down your throat, and rushes through the exposition. As the story picks up, it does seem to grasp itself and it begins to take control. The second half is remarkably better, and the suspense builds ever higher towards the final pages. I've heard a lot of mixed reception towards the ending, but I personally believe the story ends well, albeit rather shakily. The Tomorrow Code ends up being another generic action novel, but the ending will be sure to divide readers. less

Pretty fun, Tane has a good 'voice', disappointed to find it yet another series...
