review 1: Brian J. O'Connor writes a funny and thoughtful book on a painful topic: how to stretch dollars in tough times. He does it for a paper in Detroit, MI a city so hard hit by the last economic downturn reporters discover a man turning racoons into meat for people's tables. O'Connor wants to keep you from being that desperate. He takes on the challenge of cutting his family's budget by $1,000. a month in 10 weeks. The family includes his wife and their son who has some special needs in therapy and education that don't come cheap. However, he never quite loses his sense of humor and you feel like you are on the same journey: do more with less.I'm a household of one so I guess I could get the amount by 3 and see how far I can get. The categories are familiar ones and even if you ... moredon't need the drastic makeover, you'll get some important reminders about financial health we all need no matter what the economic climate.P.S. I've already checked the blog for the recipe for Aunt Fran's Chili (no raccoon needed.)
review 2: The writing was enjoyable at first but his humorous style went out the window when he got into topics like insurance and refinancing which were very technical and dry. I liked how things were related to his family and home, but pretty much all of the topics for saving do not apply to my current life situation. I could've used an overly technical chapter on saving on student loans or finding a new job. :) I noticed problems in the editing especially toward the end, missing words or unnecessary ones that should've been removed or didn't even make sense in any version of the sentence. That's a nitpicking thing to worry about, but if you're going to the trouble of publishing a book you might as well read through it carefully. I think his columns would be interesting to read but I doubt I'll actually look them up. less
