review 1: The saga continues with Marko's parents visiting the crew onboard their tree ship, and the Robot Prince and The Will continuing their pursuit. This book focuses on Marko's past including his childhood, his parents, his past relationships, and the beginnings of his relationship with Alana. The wit and plot elements from the first volume make a comeback, but this volume lacks the punch of the first. It felt more like an expository piece, focusing mainly on flashbacks and character background (albeit important background). If you liked the first volume, this is a definite must read, and a gateway to the subsequent volumes.
review 2: That luster has lost a bit of its shine, for me. That first book in the series blew my mind with its radical (and awesome) take on, um,
... more whatever, was something I won’t soon forget. But this, volume 2, well, I guess I already had the basic world building down after reading the first book, had the characters all in my head, knew the premise… so there wasn’t a ton here to hook me all over again. I realize, of course, that graphic novels like these are just collecting 6 issues of the comics and jamming them together for convenience sake. So it’s not like the creators waited a long time and then wrote a follow up novel. I’m just picking the story right up from where I left off. And it’s still pretty great. But I’m also not running around my house freaking out over it. Which is a thing I totally did when I read the first volume. Also, I didn’t feel like these 6 issues had that larger arc that the first 6 had. Ha! That’s it. That’s a real thing I can complain about, and not a made up thing that I, well, made up because I couldn’t think of something real. So maybe I’m not crazy. Maybe there is something different here. I mean, it’s still heavily serialized and all that, but whatshisname and his mom go on a quick adventure while whatsthername and whatshisname’s dad have bonding time on the ship. Also, mercenary guy rescues a girl. All that was good. I enjoyed it. But it felt a lot like a holding pattern. None of the larger plot points that were introduced in the first Graphic Novel came into play. I suppose that instead of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel after 12 issues I’m realizing this is going to be a very long time before the story is told. So, I’m going to have to readjust, sit back, and try to relax. less
