review 1: This story line had a LOT of potential. The reader immediately connects with 27 year old Lucy, who is still stuck between her divorced parents and dealing with the reason for their split, which becomes painfully evident as the story continues. Her relationship with her father, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, is beautifully portrayed in the usual devastating way, and Lucy struggles to balance his care, her new job as an Irish policewoman in her hometown, and hiding the fact that her mom is the ACC (Big Boss). I did feel that some of the writing was rushed, and there is a gaping hole right in the middle of the story when she is chasing a suspect, she "loses" him, and then they do not follow up on his house, girlfriend, etc etc. Lots of names to keep up with here, some... more of which are similar (don't call two different families Quinn and Quigg, nor should you have two Peters in one book, ok??) and the whole way the two cases she works on comes together could have been a little cleaner. There is also a devastating event at the very end that I did not understand the need for (reality maybe?? Cynic, I know...) Lucy is a character worthy of better dialogue, it's a bit stiff here, but then it is a police procedural, and I do like how she follows her gut, but seriously girl, stop going into abandoned houses ALONE!!! I don't feel too cheated, I mean I could not put it down despite all my nitpicky comments about the writing etc, and I did get it for $1 as a daily deal, so did it entertain me? Sure. Would I read the next Lucy Black volume? Hmm, maybe......
review 2: When Detective Lucy Black finds a young girl lost and wondering around the snowy woods, she sets out to find out who this girl is, why she has blood on her, and why she doesn't speak. What she finds may tear this Irish town apart, be linked to the kidnapping of a teenager in the same town, and endanger Lucy's life. It also might open old town wounds that are still raw from the Irish rebellions of the 90s. less
