review 1: Of the three stories that make up this collection, I am surprised that they chose the final story to draw the title (and therefore collection tone) from. "Thor's Daughter" tells the story of a chieftan's daughter who must step into his shoes after his death - a potentially very interesting story - but it falls somewhat short of my expectations. We're barely introduced to the characters and their conflict before it's resolved, and Wood does't actually tell us how she wins over the men. I actually turned back the page multiple times in confusion, thinking that there were a page or two missing... I personally would have chosen "the Hunter" as the titular short story, since it is the most different from any previous story lines. Following a hunter may not be groundbreaking, bu... moret the themes of potential starvation and the hard life in the North are at least a different tack and true to Wood's broad exploration of Viking themes.
review 2: There are three stories in this volume. The first, The Seige of Paris, a perfect illustration of of a futile war, costing thousands of lives and excessive loss of so much on both side, this story is well written. It ends a bit like real life, with survivors doing things they never intended. The second, The Hunt, is a story of Man vs. Nature, which takes the form of a 12 point Buck. He needs the food, the Buck eludes him, yet keeps him close enough to follow easily enough.in pure Scandinavian fashion, the tale ends with questioning the Quest and Reason for Life. The third, Thor's Daughter, A girl on the verge of womanhood, finds her father has died, and since she's not male, their is no heir and now all his holdings are up for grabs. Including her. She has very little help but she takes her only chance, against all odds. And, in pure Scandinavian fashion, again, the ending is left to our imagination! less

I feel like the first story, the Siege of Paris, could have taken up the entire book.
