review 1: Well that was terrible. Seriously this thing had nothing original in it. None. All the characters are flat and have no development. Two of them get killed off for no good reason. And no one seems to grieve for them. The reason this took me so long was because it had nothing to hook me at all. I almost didn't want to finish it. And the ending is very bad, so not even worth the effort I put into it.
review 2: This book may be suffering from false advertising: from the title and blurbs, I certainly started reading it because I thought it would be a "fun joyride," as promised. It was not. It was actually much more, very moving and thought-provoking. I can tell why the publishers wanted to lure readers in with promises of wacky hijinks--and maybe there are people wh
... moreo find global genocide humorous--but I did very little laughing. Which is not to say it's completely somber and depressing. There's enough lightness that you want to keep reading, despite the seemingly desperate situation of teens enslaved by aliens who can kill with their minds, and it moves along quickly. It would make a great discussion book: lots of interesting points about how people have treated other people are presented in frank, non-preachy ways. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that a lot of the "action" is going on mentally. There are lots of mental walls and non-physical attacks, all of which have serious effects, but are hard to describe since there's nothing to perceive with human senses. It's all a key part of the book, but I just don't enjoy scenes in which everyone is standing there doing things in their heads that I can't really visualize. I'll definitely booktalk it. It's good for all ages and that rare "boy" book that girls will like, too. It was also written in such a stark style that it would work as a high-low book for reluctant readers. less

Fast paced science fiction that can stand alone, but a sequel would be nice.

It reads like a scifi screenplay for Nickelodeon. It's not horrible.
