review 1: This was not a sit on the edge of your seat kind of book. There were parts I skimmed through. However, most of the book I found very interesting. I kept think how lucky most middle class Americans have it, and we still think we're soooo busy. Most of the time, these are choices we are making to be busy. The book has a pretty limited audience- working parents who make a decent income. However, it resonated with me, even though I only work part time, because I wonder what it would be like to work full time and how to balance all of that with parenting. As her book recommends, I think it would be essential that both parents to share home and parenting responsibilities equally. I found her study of other European countries, especially Denmark particularly interesting. It made... more me think about work and home life in a little different way.
review 2: This book was the community health selection in my county this summer and an excellent choice! The author investigates, with a balance of research and anecdotes, how we have become a society of unhappy workers void of fulfilling personal lives struggling to maintain our physical and mental health while raising over-scheduled children in loveless marriages. While Schulte focuses primarily on the effect of our maddening modern lifestyle on women, this book reveals the causes and effects of the "overwhelm" upon us all. I can't help but reference it in conversations with my family and neighbors almost daily. Although the style can seem fact-heavy and sluggish at times, it is worth taking the time to digest as Schulte offers examples and suggestions on how to improve our quality of life on both the social and personal levels. If you can eek out the time to pick this book up, it will be well worth it! less

Particularly fascinated by the Denmark chapter and the discussion of maternity in Scandinavia...
