review 1: Another in one of my least favorite mystery/crime genres in which everyone in the world sucks but the (flawed) hero and a couple of his friends without the saving grace of being as well written as similar from the likes of Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, and James Lee Burke. There's no real mystery - what's going on is obvious from very early in the book - and the ending seems rushes and somehow inconsequential. The author also couldn't seem to settle on a tone between wacky wiseguy and tormented anti-hero. Very disconcerting. The narrator of this Audible audiobook, Jeff Woodman, was fine. I've never heard anyone in Rhode Island sport the accents he gives some of the characters, but I imagine most listeners would be unaware of that fact.
review 2: DeSilva's w
... moreriting style is short, quick and to the point, with lots of dialog and very few descriptive paragraphs. The author develops characters in their conversations. The settings are a newspaper's offices, bars, grocery stores, fire engine houses, cars, police interrogation rooms and bedrooms. Rogue Island accurately describes the slow demise of a metropolitan newspaper and a mill town. The main characters are interesting and somewhat unique. Rogue Island is detective fiction in which the detection is performed by a print news writer. Overall, a second novel with the same characters would be welcomed. less
