review 1: I read Rogue Island a couple of months ago, so when I saw another by DeSilva I grabbed it right away. At first glance this is a typical reporter crime book. It has a somewhat troubled hero, a newspaper in financial trouble, etc.....but in this case it works and works well. The characters seem almost too vivid, even some of the minor characters, but.....it works well. The author's spare, witty dialogue rivals that of Robert B. Parker. I can't wait until his next book comes out.
review 2: I do like the style of mystery writing by the author. His first novel, Rogue Island was terrific. This one, although good, was not as good. I did not like the subject matter, the exploitation of children and related violence. In addition to enjoying his writing style, I e... morenjoy the fact that this novel, as the first one, takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. Being from the area, I enjoy the reference to south eastern New England. Mulligan is a great character, the author has a great writing style but the subject matter in this novel was not good. less
