Starvation Lake Mystery
review 1: While I like hockey, I don't know the game well and thought this book might be too sports oriented for me. Luckily I gave it a try anyway, and I'm so glad I did. This is a solid mystery, spiced up with a lot of personal drama and side stories which keep you reading hoping to find the answers to all the questions. While I felt that Gus's personal drama was sort of pushed to the side at the end of the book, I enjoyed the way the main mystery developed as well as the personal relationships intertwined throughout the book. While the subject matter of the crime is one I usually avoid in books, the reasons for the murder came so late in the book that I was almost done before I found out what they were. (This is probably for the best since I wouldn't have read it if I'd known... more sooner.) I am looking forward to the next book in the series, and I'm glad to have found a great new writer.
review 2: I found the author's descriptions in this book vivid. The story was good and though I figured some things out there were also surprises. I feel that when an author is passionate about something it translates to the reader. In this book it was hockey. I knew reading it that the author must love hockey and later discovered from his bio that it is true. I just got so much insight into the playing of this game from the player's point of view. There are also some eccentric characters and I loved getting to know them. I hope some of them turn up in following books. less
