Starvation Lake Mystery
review 1: Starvation Lake is seeing a series of break-ins in the homes of people when they are away from home playing bingo. Gus Carpenter, the editor of the small town newspaper has put the link between the two events. The police are puzzled because nothing of value has been taken, although files and papers in the homes have been disturbed. That changes when Phyllis, the next door neighbor and long time friend of Bea Carpenter, Gus's mother is killed in Bea's home. Bea suffers from early dementia so remembers little of the event. Phyllis is also the mother of Darlene, Gus's ex-girlfriend and a deputy at the local police station. Darlene works with Gus to try to discover her mother's murderer. Luke Whistler, a big time reporter has moved to Starvation Lake to take early retirement b... moreut is working with Gus at the newspaper office. Gus soon realizes Luke has an agenda of his own. Gus and Darlene discover a link between a nun who was killed years before and the current break-ins. Bea knew this nun years ago when she attended a Catholic School as a child. Gus suspects Bea knows more than she is willing to admit. A good story but I was hoping for a little more action.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it quite a mystery as its plot. The mystery spanned many, many years and this is really something for a small town like Starvation Lake, MN. I really like Bryan Gruley's writing style. He know how to make you feel for the characters and know how hard their existence is for much of the calendar year. I read his first book, "Starvation Lake", and loved it too, but somehow missed "The Hanging Tree", the second one in the series from what I understand. I am going to have to correct that oversight as soon as I possibly can! I have lived in many small towns and the social interactions between the characters is just so perfect from my own experience. I think this author has a great future ahead of him! less
